Somebody says it in the driveway most weeks, usually while the dog is getting toweled off. You could probably get this done cheaper at the shop on Forest Lane. True. You could. So here is where the difference goes, line by line, because "premium service" is not an answer.
How much more are we talking?
Roughly $20 to $40 more per visit than a salon. That is the whole gap, and we would rather print it than have you dig it out on the phone.
On top of that sits a trip fee, $5 to $50 depending on your zone, and $5 to $15 across the home cluster around Farmers Branch and North Dallas. Your exact fee shows up in the booking confirmation before anything is scheduled.
Where does that money actually go?
Four places, mostly.
The van is a shop that holds one dog. A salon can run several dogs through one tub in a morning, with a bather feeding a line of groomers. We run one dog, start to finish, one groomer, about an hour. That is a much smaller amount of work per paid hour, and that arithmetic is most of the gap right there.
The van costs money whether the dog is dirty or not. It carries its own water, its own hot water, its own power, its own tub and dryer. Tires, fuel, insurance, maintenance and the repairs a working vehicle picks up getting driven across Dallas all day. A salon pays rent. We pay rent that burns fuel.
Drive time is unbilled time. The stretch between your house and the next one is time when nobody is grooming anything. A salon's next dog is already in the building.
One person does the whole dog. No handoffs. Whoever brushes your dog out also bathes her, dries her and cuts her. Nobody is passing her down a line to keep the numbers up.
Why does the price change so much from dog to dog?
Because the work does. A bath starts at $75 for a small smooth coat and goes up to about $180 for an extra large double coat. A full groom, bath plus haircut, starts at $130 and runs to about $210.
Two things move it. Weight, where small is up to 29 lbs, medium up to 44, large up to 64 and extra large is anything above 64. And coat, which matters more than most people expect. Smooth, standard, curly, double. A double coated dog in a Dallas August takes an enormous amount of drying, and drying is the slow part of this job, not cutting. Is the salon overcharging, then, or are we?
Neither. They are two different businesses that happen to share a word.
The salon model works because it batches. Batching means crates, and waiting, and your dog sitting damp between the bath and the haircut while other dogs get done. A salon trip is commonly four hours door to door and dogs can wait six hours. That is not cruelty, it is just how a room with that many dogs in it has to run.
Ours works because it does not batch. No cages, no other dogs, no waiting room, one dog in the van at a time. The trade is that a van can only do a handful of dogs a day, and the price has to carry that. Does paying more buy a better haircut?

BOOK A GROOMNot automatically, and anybody who says otherwise is selling something. There are excellent groomers in salons all over Dallas, and some of them are better with scissors than some of us.
What the price does buy is a calmer dog on the table. A calm dog holds still, and holding still shows up in the finish, especially around the face and feet. It also buys the same groomer wherever the schedule allows, which means somebody who already knows your dog hates having her back feet held and plans the order around it.
How do I pay less without cutting corners?
Two ways, and that is the entire list. Rebook on the day of the groom and your next visit is $7 off. Go on a recurring schedule of every 2, 4 or 8 weeks and every visit is $15 off, permanently.
There is a third saving that is not a discount at all. Stay on schedule. Standard and curly coats want a groom every 4 to 6 weeks. Smooth coats want a bath every 8 to 12 weeks. Double coats want a proper de-shed in spring and again in autumn, with baths in between. A coat that gets seen on time never turns into a de-matting job, and a de-matting job costs real money and a lot of the dog's patience.
That is the whole ledger. None of it is padding, and none of it is a reason you have to book a van. Plenty of dogs do fine in a salon. But if you have been wondering what the extra is for, now you know where each piece of it sits.
