You Are Not a Bad Dog Parent. You Are About Six Weeks Behind.

My dog is matted, what now? The plan, the options and the honest cost, with no lecture.

The short answerIf your dog is matted, have a groomer check the coat before anything starts. If a comb slides flat against the skin, it brushes out. If the comb stops, the mats are locked down and a short haircut is usually the kinder option. A full groom, bath plus haircut, starts at $130.

You found the first mat behind her ear while you were scratching it, and your stomach dropped. Then you found two more, one in each armpit.

Before anything else, this is not a character flaw. A curly coat can felt in about six weeks with nobody doing a single thing wrong. It rains, the dog rolls in the grass, somebody gets busy for a month, and the coat locks up. We see it every week. Nobody here is going to lecture you.

No lecture. We just start at the edges and work in.

Why does a mat actually hurt?

A mat is not a knot sitting on top of the coat. It is hair that has wound in on itself and pulled down tight against the skin. Every time your dog walks, shakes, sits or turns her head, that mat tugs. And it does not let go between tugs the way a tangle in your own hair does. It pulls all day and all night.

That is why a matted dog starts ducking away from the brush. She is not being difficult. The brush is landing on skin that has been pulled on for weeks. Under a bad mat the skin can be pink, damp, sometimes raw. You will not see it until the coat comes off.

Can it just be brushed out?

Sometimes. It depends on two things, how deep the mats go and how much of the dog they cover.

The test is simple, and your groomer will do it in front of you. Slide a comb in flat against the skin and see if it moves. If the comb slides, that is a tangle. Conditioner, a slicker brush and some patience will handle it, usually inside a normal appointment.

If the comb stops dead, the coat is locked to the skin. Working that out by hand can take two or three times as long as a haircut, and every one of those minutes is more pulling on skin that is already sore. That is the honest trade, and it is the whole decision. Longer and more painful, or shorter and finished quickly.

So is a short haircut giving up?

No. It is usually the kind answer.

“We had such a wonderful experience with Poochies! Our groomer, Christie, was absolutely fantastic with our golden retriever—so patient, gentle, and clearly experienced. Our pup can be a little difficult with grooming, but Christie made him feel completely at ease. He came back inside looking clean, fluffy, and so happy! It was incredibly convenient to have the service come right to our home, and the whole process was smooth and stress-free. Highly recommend!!” Michele L. · Google review

We know a short coat is not what you pictured. It looks bare for a few weeks and it feels like a failure. It is not. A dog who has been carrying tight mats for a month walks differently within the hour. She stretches. She lies flat on her side again. That change is the point, not the haircut.

If you want to know how short short really is and what the coat looks like coming back, When Is a Dog Shave Down the Right Choice? covers it plainly.

What happens when the van pulls up?

The groomer who comes out gets hands on your dog before any clipper is switched on, whether that driveway is in Lakewood or off Walnut Hill. She will show you exactly what she is feeling, on your actual dog, not in the abstract. Behind the ears, the armpits, the back legs, the base of the tail, under the collar. That is where mats hide, in about that order, almost every time.

Then you get a plain choice and a plain price, and you make the call. We do not shave a dog and explain afterward. That is not a rule we bend. If the coat turns out worse than it looked from the porch, the groomer stops and talks to you before going any further.

The rest is what it always is. Wash, blow out, nail trim, ear cleaning and a finishing spritz. Most appointments run about an hour and plenty are done inside 90 minutes.

What is this going to cost?

Sound like your dog? We bring the van to your driveway. No cages, no car rides, same groomer every time.

BOOK A GROOM

A full groom, which is the bath plus the haircut, starts at $130 and runs to about $210 depending on your dog's size and coat. A matted coat sits higher in that range than a clean one, because it takes longer and it is harder on equipment. You hear the number before anybody starts, not after. If you want the arithmetic behind that, What a Matted Coat Adds to a Dog Grooming Price breaks it down.

How do I keep it from happening again?

Get on a rhythm and let the calendar do the remembering.

Curly and standard coats want a groom every 4 to 6 weeks. Smooth coats can go 8 to 12. Double coats want a real de-shed in spring and again in autumn, with baths in between.

Between visits, comb rather than brush, and go after the five spots above instead of the back. The back is the part everybody brushes and the part that almost never mats.

Your dog is not ruined. Nothing you found this morning is beyond fixing this week, and an hour in the driveway usually settles it.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY

Myla was so kind to my Lollie. She did a beautiful job. Lollie, unfortunately, was matted but Myla just went to work and got her looking good. I highly recommend Poochie's Pampered Pet. They are reasonable and they care about your pet. I will be calling again for the next appointment.
