The comb stops about an inch in. Ten weeks instead of five, and a curly coat does not wait for anybody. You already know. You do not need a lecture on top of it.
What does a matted coat add to the price?
There is a real number for this and it is on our list, so here it is.
De-matting is billed by the minute. It is $2 a minute, with a $20 minimum, rounded to the nearest five minutes. If the coat is too far gone to comb through and has to be shaved before the groom can start, there is a $30 shave down fee on top of that.
Both sit on top of the groom itself, which starts at $130 and runs to about $210 depending on size and coat. Whatever the total comes to on your dog, your groomer works it out in the driveway and tells you before starting, not silently at the end. If the number does not work for you, say so, and you pick a different plan together right there.
Why can you not just brush it out?
Sometimes we can. It depends how far down the mat sits.
Think felt rather than tangles. A mat is fur that has pressed down flat against the skin, and it pulls every time the dog moves, sits, or scratches behind an ear. Working it out means holding tension on skin that is already sore, for a long stretch.
Every groomer has a line where brushing stops being grooming and starts being something a dog should not have to sit through. A few minutes of comb work on one small patch is fine. A long session of it across a whole back end is not. Most of us will do the first and refuse the second, and refusing is the kind part of the job.
Is a shave down really that bad?
No. It looks far worse than it is, and owners take it much harder than dogs do.
A short shave on a badly matted dog is relief. The pulling stops. Skin that has been under felt for weeks gets air, and any rash or hot spot hiding under there finally gets seen. Your dog will look naked, and small, and slightly ridiculous, and then will run laps around the yard.

How did six weeks turn into a shave down?
This is the part worth understanding. Six weeks is not a long time to be busy, and it is long enough for a curly coat to go past what a comb can fix.
Standard and curly coats want a groom every 4 to 6 weeks. Miss one cycle and you are at double that. In the gap the coat changed, not only in length. Dallas humidity. A swim. A wet walk around the lake in Lakewood and a dog who dried herself off by rolling on the rug. Add a harness rubbing the chest, a collar rubbing the neck, and the two spots behind the ears and under the front legs where every coat mats first.
Every one of those is a normal week with a dog in it.
What does the waiting actually cost me?
More than the de-matting minutes, usually. The chain runs like this.

BOOK A GROOMYou wait, so the groom takes longer and costs more. It takes longer, so the dog has a harder day than she needed to. The coat comes off short, so the style you wanted is gone for months. Then you are back on a 4 to 6 week cycle anyway to grow it out properly, so you did not even save an appointment.
The boring version costs less at every step. A coat seen on time is a straightforward groom every single time. Smooth coats are easier still, a bath every 8 to 12 weeks. Double coats want a real de-shed in spring and again in fall with baths in between, and skipping the spring one in Dallas is its own kind of mistake.
How do I keep from getting back here?
Book the next one before the van leaves. That is genuinely the whole trick, and it happens to be cheaper, since rebooking on the day of the groom takes $7 off the next visit. On a recurring schedule of every 2, 4 or 8 weeks, every visit is $15 off, permanently. Those two are the only discounts we have, and the recurring one exists precisely because dogs on a schedule never end up in an article like this.
Between visits, ten minutes with a comb beats an hour with a brush. A brush glides over the top of a forming mat and leaves you feeling fine about it. A comb catches. Do the armpits, behind the ears, the collar line and the backs of the legs. If a comb goes through cleanly in those four places, the rest of her is fine.
