You Found One Flea, Which Means You Have More

One flea on the comb means a population in the house. The adults you can see on the dog are the small part. The eggs and the larvae are in the rug, the bed and the back seat of the car.

So here is the first 48 hours in order. None of it requires panic, and all of it works better done together than one piece at a time.

What do I do in the first hour?

Get a flea comb and work over a white towel, especially at the base of the tail and along the belly. Black specks that smear rust red on a wet paper towel are flea dirt. That is your confirmation.

Then call your vet today, not next week. The thing that actually ends a flea problem is a vet grade preventive on every animal in the house, dogs and cats both, started at the same time. Everything else on this list is cleanup around that. Store shelf products are where most of the wasted weeks happen.

Wash the dog's bedding on hot. Wash whatever human bedding she sleeps on too. Vacuum every carpet and every soft chair, get the edges of the rooms where the larvae sit, and take the bag or the canister straight outside to the bin rather than leaving it in the closet.

Why is treating the house not optional?

Because the dog is not the problem. The dog is the visible part of the problem.

You can bathe a dog until she squeaks and she will be covered again within the week if the carpet is still loaded. Eggs roll off wherever she lies down, hatch on their own schedule and come back for her. That is the loop people get stuck in for a month, and it is not because they did anything wrong. They treated one half of it.

Can you come out and do a flea bath?

Sometimes. It is arranged one case at a time, and it starts with a phone call rather than the booking form.

Here is the reason, straight. If we can take it, be clear about what a bath does. It kills what is on the dog that day and it gets the flea dirt out of the coat, which stops a lot of the itching and the misery. It is not treatment and it is not protection. Without the preventive and the house work, the fleas are back before the coat has finished drying out.

How did my dog even get them?

Usually the yard. Shade, mulch, under the deck, the cool strip beside the fence. Opossums, squirrels and stray cats move through Dallas back yards at night and drop eggs where they walk.

Indoor only cats count too, by the way. They do not need to go outside. Everything else in the house goes outside for them.

When is this a vet visit rather than a bath?

Call the vet the same day if you see any of this.

Pale gums, or a puppy gone quiet and floppy. A heavy flea load takes enough blood to make a small dog anemic. That is an emergency, not a wait and see.

White specks like grains of rice around the tail or in the bedding. That is tapeworm, which dogs pick up by swallowing fleas, and it needs a specific dewormer.

How long before this is over?

Longer than feels fair, and that is normal rather than a sign you missed something.

Even when you do everything right on day one, eggs already down in the carpet keep hatching on their own timetable, so you will still be seeing the odd flea for a while. Keep vacuuming, keep the preventive going on every pet, and do not judge the plan by what you see in week one.
