You Found One Flea, Which Means You Have More

What to do in the first 48 hours after finding fleas on your dog in Dallas.

The short answerOne flea means more in the house. In the first 48 hours, get a vet grade preventive on every pet, wash all bedding hot, vacuum daily and empty the canister outside, and treat the yard shade spots. Flea baths are arranged case by case by phone at (469) 652-7911, never booked automatically.

One flea on the comb means a population in the house. The adults you can see on the dog are the small part. The eggs and the larvae are in the rug, the bed and the back seat of the car.

So here is the first 48 hours in order. None of it requires panic, and all of it works better done together than one piece at a time.

A bath is step two. Step one happens in the house.

What do I do in the first hour?

Get a flea comb and work over a white towel, especially at the base of the tail and along the belly. Black specks that smear rust red on a wet paper towel are flea dirt. That is your confirmation.

Then call your vet today, not next week. The thing that actually ends a flea problem is a vet grade preventive on every animal in the house, dogs and cats both, started at the same time. Everything else on this list is cleanup around that. Store shelf products are where most of the wasted weeks happen.

Wash the dog's bedding on hot. Wash whatever human bedding she sleeps on too. Vacuum every carpet and every soft chair, get the edges of the rooms where the larvae sit, and take the bag or the canister straight outside to the bin rather than leaving it in the closet.

Why is treating the house not optional?

Because the dog is not the problem. The dog is the visible part of the problem.

You can bathe a dog until she squeaks and she will be covered again within the week if the carpet is still loaded. Eggs roll off wherever she lies down, hatch on their own schedule and come back for her. That is the loop people get stuck in for a month, and it is not because they did anything wrong. They treated one half of it.

Treat the dog, treat the house, and do the shaded spots in the yard where she naps. All three, in the same week. Dallas gives us mild winters, which is lovely for us and very good news for fleas, so nothing here gets knocked back by the cold the way it does further north.

Can you come out and do a flea bath?

Sometimes. It is arranged one case at a time, and it starts with a phone call rather than the booking form.

“I get my Yorkshire Terrier Emmy Bear booked with these ladies about three times a year, and he gets the works! I like to give him a Teddy Bear haircut and they always do it the way I ask. Everyone is fantastic, but Brandy has that touch with Dogs, a gift from above. Their pricing is competitive compared to the places you must drive to and wait; although there's no comparison in the value and services you get for your dollar Pocchie's far exceeds these places. Why not choose this superb, convenient service and support local woman-owned small business?” Tessie S. · Google review

Here is the reason, straight. A van is a small space with one dog after another in it all day, and we are not willing to carry an infestation out of one driveway in Lakewood and into the next family's house. So we talk it through at (469) 652-7911 first. We will tell you honestly whether we can take it, when, and what we would want done at your end before the appointment.

If we can take it, be clear about what a bath does. It kills what is on the dog that day and it gets the flea dirt out of the coat, which stops a lot of the itching and the misery. It is not treatment and it is not protection. Without the preventive and the house work, the fleas are back before the coat has finished drying out.

How did my dog even get them?

Usually the yard. Shade, mulch, under the deck, the cool strip beside the fence. Opossums, squirrels and stray cats move through Dallas back yards at night and drop eggs where they walk.

After that it is the greenbelt, the dog park and the trail. If your dog also swims and then rolls in the grass, you have a second problem stacking on the first, and Dog Swam at White Rock Lake? The 48 Hour Rule covers that one.

Indoor only cats count too, by the way. They do not need to go outside. Everything else in the house goes outside for them.

When is this a vet visit rather than a bath?

Call the vet the same day if you see any of this.

Sound like your dog? We bring the van to your driveway. No cages, no car rides, same groomer every time.

Pale gums, or a puppy gone quiet and floppy. A heavy flea load takes enough blood to make a small dog anemic. That is an emergency, not a wait and see.

White specks like grains of rice around the tail or in the bedding. That is tapeworm, which dogs pick up by swallowing fleas, and it needs a specific dewormer.

Raw patches, scabbing, hair coming out in a ring. Some dogs are allergic to flea saliva, and one bite sets off a reaction far bigger than one bite should. Itchy Skin and Hot Spots on Dogs in Dallas walks through what that looks like and where the line sits.

How long before this is over?

Longer than feels fair, and that is normal rather than a sign you missed something.

Even when you do everything right on day one, eggs already down in the carpet keep hatching on their own timetable, so you will still be seeing the odd flea for a while. Keep vacuuming, keep the preventive going on every pet, and do not judge the plan by what you see in week one.

You caught it. That is the part that was in your hands.

WHAT CLIENTS SAY
★★★★★

We have been using Poochies for about six months now. Dominic is an amazing groomer and I couldn't not be happier with his service. Not only does he make my dog look like her absolute best, but his professionalism is unmatched. I feel completely comfortable leaving her in his hands, and I really feel like he cares about her. Poochies coming to our house is so convenient and also helps ease my dog's anxiety. I will never use a different dog grooming company.
