How do I know if the pavement is too hot for my dog?

Seven seconds. That's the whole test, and you can do it right now on your own driveway.

Put the back of your hand flat on the surface and count to seven. Not your palm, the back of your hand, because palm skin is tougher than you think and it will lie to you. If you pull away before seven, the dog doesn't go on it. No app, no chart, no guessing from the weather on your phone.

Do it on the actual surface you're about to walk on, because they aren't equal. Dark asphalt is the worst and it holds heat long after the sun is off it, so a parking lot that's been baking since noon is still dangerous at eight in the evening. Concrete sidewalk runs cooler but not automatically safe. Grass and packed dirt are usually fine. Metal is worse than all of it, so watch truck beds, manhole covers and drain grates.

What time of day is actually safe here?

Early morning, for most of a Dallas summer. And our summer isn't the eight weeks the rest of the country gets. It's May into October, and September is routinely still in the nineties, which is exactly when burns sneak up on people, because it feels like the season should be over.

Evening feels cooler on your face, and it is, but the ground lags behind the air by hours. A seven o'clock walk in July is often on pavement hotter than it was at ten that morning. Do the hand test anyway. If it fails, move to grass, find shade, or skip it. A missed walk costs you nothing. What does a burned pad look like?

Often you don't see it happen. A dog will keep walking on something that's hurting him because you're walking, and he'd rather be with you than stop.

The signs come later. Limping, or a sudden flat refusal to keep going. Licking and chewing at the feet that evening. Pads that look redder or darker than usual, or oddly pale. A pad surface gone smooth and shiny where it should be rough. Loose flaps. Blisters.

Blisters, missing pad or raw skin is a vet visit, not a grooming question, and not something to sleep on. Feet are hard to keep clean and harder to keep the dog off.

What do long nails have to do with hot ground?

More than people expect. A nail long enough to touch the floor changes how the foot lands. The toes get pushed back and up, weight shifts onto the rear of the pad, and the dog ends up with less contact surface carrying the same load. That's more pressure on less pad, on ground that's already too hot.

It also changes how he stands and moves in general, which stacks up over years on hips and shoulders. For a senior dog that's not a small thing.

Every bath we do includes a nail trim, alongside the wash, the blow out, ear cleaning and a finishing spritz. If nails and ears are the jobs you keep meaning to get to and never do, the whole side of it is covered in ear, teeth and nail care.

Should the hair between the pads come off in summer?

Ask for it, on anything with furry feet. Long pad hair mats into a hard little disc between the toes, collects grass seed and gravel, and holds damp in a spot that never dries. It also slides on tile, so you get a dog skating across your kitchen instead of gripping it.

Trimmed level with the pad is what you want, not scooped out between the toes. The hair around the outside of the foot can stay tidy for looks. The stuff between the pads is a function job, and mentioning it to the groomer who comes out takes about a minute.

While the feet are up, that's the moment to look at the pads themselves. Cracked, dry, or peeling pads are worth flagging, and so is anything wedged between the toes. Grass awns in summer are a classic, and they don't work their way out on their own.

Do booties and paw wax help?

Booties work if your dog will keep them on, and plenty won't. Get them fitted properly, introduce them indoors first, and expect a comedy phase. They're most useful for crossing one hot stretch, a lot or a bridge, rather than for a whole walk in the heat, because feet sweat and a boot holds that in.

Wax and balm are a real thing for dry, cracked pads and for grip on slick floors. They are not heat protection. A waxed pad still burns on a surface that fails the hand test. If anybody tells you different, go and do the test yourself.
